Dealing with College Stress

College can be both a wonderful time and a difficult time. For many college students it is the first time that they have lived on their own, managed their own bills, all while attending classes with a heavy work load. No wonder college students would describe themselves as stressed. However, there are ways to deal with that stress.

One of the most important things that students need to master is time management. Between working, school, friends, and family, time can slip away. Therefore, it is important to keep a firm grip on what you are going to be doing when. Inevitably, there will be weeks that are jam-packed with homework and then there are weeks where you have almost nothing to do. On weeks where you have very little work, try to jump ahead in a few areas of your course work. Read a few extra chapters of the next book for your English class, glance through the next few lessons and experiments for science class. That way, when the next week you have homework up to your eyeballs, you will be ahead of the game.

If you are feeling truly overwhelmed, speak with your instructors. While an instructor will not let you slid on every assignment, if you are feeling like you are drowning, they might give you an extension. Remember that instructors were students at one time, so they will understand what you are going through. You might not be the only person who has approached the instructor either which might make the instructor slow down their lessons plans.
